Why Brilliant Women Still Doubt Themselves

Despite their achievements, many women leaders experience impostor syndrome—the persistent doubt about their capabilities and success. In fact, I was one of those women!
According to the American Psychological Association, 70% of individuals experience impostor feelings at some point, but it disproportionately affects high-achieving women. Here are some interesting statistics:
A KPMG study reports 75% of female executives have experienced imposter syndrome at some point in their careers
One survey found 49% of Black women reported imposter syndrome, compared to 30% of white women
45% of women of color have been "the only" woman in corporate rooms—an environment that heightens impostor feelings
Women of color hold just 9% of senior manager roles vs 25% for white women; in the C-suite, it’s 7% vs 22%, respectively
Why This Happens
Societal expectations, lack of representation, and internalized messaging contribute to self-doubt. Women often attribute success to luck rather than competence, and fear being exposed as a “fraud.”
Signs of Impostor Syndrome
Overworking to prove your worth
Discounting praise or achievements
Fear of being "found out"
Strategies to Overcome It
1. Name the Voice. Recognize when your inner critic is speaking. Ask yourself: "Is this thought true, helpful, or kind?"
2. Track Your Wins. Keep a success journal. Writing down accomplishments helps reinforce your growth and competence.
3. Seek Community. Surround yourself with women who lift you up and reflect your brilliance back to you. That’s exactly what Her Power Circle is for.
4. Practice Self-Compassion. You’re allowed to be excellent and imperfect. Speak to yourself like you would to your best friend.
5. Redefine Success. Own your story and define success on your terms. Whether it’s leading a team, launching a business, or balancing work and caregiving—it all counts.
